Once you decide to do naam jap, the next step is to find the best ways to do it. There are many ways to practice naam jap.

You can chant the name loudly with your tongue. Or, you can chant silently inside your mouth with slightly moving your tongue. You can even chant mentally without moving your tongue at all.

The subtler your practice, the more effective it becomes. For example, chanting mentally for one minute gives better results than chanting loudly for one minute. But mental chanting needs strong concentration.

If you lose focus, start chanting loudly. Don’t fool yourself by saying you are doing naam jap inside when you are not. Here’s a simple rule when chanting mentally with your breath: if you miss chanting for three breaths, switch to chanting out loud. When you regain focus, go back to mental chanting.

Many people struggle with whether to chant mentally or aloud. Mental chanting works better but is harder to maintain. So check how many breaths you have missed. If it is three, chant aloud. This is trick number 1.

The most efficient method is this: chant the name as many times as possible while inhaling. Then hold your breath and chant as many times as possible. Next, chant while exhaling and then hold your breath again.

Loud chanting also works very well because it forces your mind to focus.
